Tour de France in Spain
2 of the 21 stages of this year´s Tour de France will be in Spain´s Autonomous Community of Catalonia, north east of the country.
The Tour which started yesterday in Monaco, will be in Girona on July 9 for the first time, after the Perpignan stage dedicated to Salvador Dali. The university city of almost 100 thousand inhabitants and the Onyar river crossing the heart, has quite some attractions with an old wellkept historical centre, a cathedral, a roman wall with nice views, some museums, Arabian Baths as well as a Jewish Quarter. Not to mention the gastronomy worthwhile trying.
From the capital of the province with the same name, the Tour de France will leave Girona towards the world famous Costa Brava, passing the beautiful costal town Tossa, Lloret de Mar and other places before finally reaching after more than 180 km Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia.
The buzzling Mediterranean city with its multi-cultural way of life, a favorable climate for outdoor activities and sightseeing along the beaches, streets, squares and Gothic Quarter is the most southern point of this year´s most famous cycling race.
The stage will finish on the Montjuic hill, surrounded by the 1992 Olympic Stadium, the magical fountains with there everchanging colours and music, apart from the 1929 Universal Exhibition buildings.
